How to record WAV audio on Android

WAV is what you want when the audio is going into an edit. No compression, no surprises. Here's how to get it out of your phone with Flowphonic.

The short version

Pick Lossless in Settings and you get 48 kHz, 16-bit WAV. Turn on 32-bit float if you'd like extra headroom.

Why bother with WAV

Compressed formats throw away detail to save space. That's fine for a voice memo you'll play back once. It's less fine when you're going to cut, clean up and mix the audio, because every export after that works on what's left.

WAV keeps everything the microphone heard. The files are bigger, and that's the only real cost.

Record a WAV in Flowphonic

  1. Open Settings and choose Lossless quality. That's the uncompressed 48 kHz, 16-bit PCM WAV tier.
  2. Pick mono or stereo. Stereo needs an input that's actually stereo, so a single phone mic won't give you true left and right.
  3. Want more headroom? Switch on 32-bit float. More on that below.
  4. Set your gain on the Record screen and watch the meters while you speak at your normal level.
  5. Hit REC. Your take is saved as a WAV in the app's private storage, and you can export it whenever you like.

16-bit or 32-bit float?

16-bit is the standard and sounds great when your levels are sensible. 32-bit float has far more headroom, so a loud surprise (a laugh, a door slam) is much less likely to clip. The files are twice as big.

If you can't control the sound, like an event or a noisy street, float is a nice safety net. For a calm studio-style read, 16-bit is plenty. We cover the other safety nets in stopping clipping.

Good to know

  • Lossless is 48 kHz. The smaller tiers save AAC (.m4a) instead. See how the tiers compare.
  • Phones differ. Test with your own device before a big shoot.
