Keep recording when the screen is off

Long takes shouldn't depend on you keeping the screen awake. Background recording is built for the long days.

The short version

Background recording is a setting that's on by default. A notification shows while a take is running, and the screen can dim to save battery.

How it works

With background recording on, a persistent notification and a microphone foreground service keep your take going while the app is in the background or the screen is off. You'll see the notification the whole time, so you always know it's recording.

Saving battery

The screen can dim during long takes. That's usually where the battery goes, so dimming helps a lot on a full day.

Be a good citizen

The ongoing notification is on purpose. Recording audio should never be invisible, and Android requires it. If you're recording other people, tell them. That's good practice and, depending on where you live, may be a legal requirement.

Pair it with

A take on the Record screen: the live transcript fills in, and saying "circle this" drops a marker. The saved take lists it with the quote.
